If you are self-employed or a partner

Whether you are self-employed as a sole trader or a partner in partnership, you can register for Self Assessment online via the gov.uk website. If you wish to complete registration by post, form CWF1 needs to be completed for self-employment and form SA401 needs to be completed if you are a partner.

Please also note that if you are a partner, the partnership itself also needs registering for Self-Assessment. This can be done online or by submitting form SA400 by post.

If you have to register for any other reason

You may have to register for Self Assessment even if you are not self-employed or a partner, this could be because you receive rental income, have taxable foreign income, receive annual income over £150,000, have Capital Gains Tax to pay, you receive income from a trust or settlement, or you may be receiving Child Benefit payments and you or your partner earn over £50,000.

To register for Self Assessment for these reasons, you can apply online, or submit form SA1 by post.
